Newsletter submissions: Deadline Extended to 23 September 2022

Seeking newsletter submissions for Fall 2022 issue

The Canadian Council for Southeast Asian Studies (CCSEAS) is currently seeking submissions from its members for its next newsletter, which will be released in Fall 2022. Submissions should be around 800 words unless otherwise indicated and all photos/visual art should include captions and credits and be copyright free or be accompanied by appropriate permissions. 

We welcome and encourage submissions from our membership in English or French in these categories:  

Reports from the field: Notes from researchers who are currently in the field or have completed fieldwork in Southeast Asia and its Diasporas. Submissions can be about research as well as about personal experiences. We also encourage potential contributors to include photographs to accompany their submissions.  

Creative written projects: Poetry, short stories or other creative written projects based on experience conducting fieldwork in Southeast Asia and its Diasporas. Submissions can be about research as well as personal experiences conducting research. We also encourage potential contributors to include original photographs or visual art to accompany their submissions.  

Interview transcripts: Transcripts from interviews conducted with experts or research participants on matters relating to Southeast Asia and its Diasporas. Submissions should include a brief bio of the interviewee as well as recorded consent.  

Photo essays: Text and photographs from members conducting research on Southeast Asia and its Diasporas. Submissions can be about research as well as about personal experiences conducting research and should be around 400 words and include at least four photographs. 

Tips and tricks: A list of tips for matters relating to conducting research in, travelling to or otherwise engaging with Southeast Asia and its Diaspora. (For example, five tips for working with research assistants, 10 tips for getting around Jakarta, etc.) Submissions should be a minimum of around 100 words and a maximum of 400 and include a minimum of five tips.  

Suggested reading: List of suggested reading on topics related to Southeast Asia and its Diaspora. Readings can include academic articles and books as well as fiction and other creative written works. Reading lists should include a minimum of five titles with a short description of each title. Submissions should be a minimum of around 200 words and a maximum of around 600.  

Member updates: Updates from members can be about various subjects including, but not limited to, one’s own research, a specific project/programme/initiative, or about the situation of Southeast Asian/Diaspora studies in different countries.  

Other: If you would like to submit a project not covered by the above categories, please contact us ccseas@yorku.ca. We are open to your suggestions.
